The MEPA board this morning gave their approval on the rehabilitation of the former Gozo landfill site, Qortin, near Xaghra. The project is to be completed by 2012.

If the site is then to be turned into a park, it will then need a separate permit.

The original draft design, which was produced by architect Edward Scerri, includes a cable car to take visitors from the lowest point to the highest, providing panoramic views of Ramla, Marsalforn and the Citadel.

It also includes the creation of two large freshwater pools, supplied with run-off water collected in a reservoir. There will also be an adventure playground, a belvedere, an open-air theatre, a drive-in cinema and a ‘light structure’ revolving restaurant.

An extensive tree planting exercise is planned. Also planned are some 2,000 photovoltaic panels along with a number of wind turbines to produce clean energy. Archaeological and historic remains on the site are to be incorporated in the park.
