Alternattiva Demokratika – The Green Party said that they appealed for the adoption of legislatlion for the elimination of every form of discrimination so that everybody irrespective of sexual orientation will be at par in the eyes of the state. This is necessary for an inclusive social policy.

Michael Briguglio, AD Chairperson, said, “Green parties have always been the most progressive parties when it comes to LGBT rights – the track record of the Greens in the European parliament is a case in point. Malta is no exception. Alternattiva Demokratika – The Green Party’s principles are not for sale. We have always been against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, and we are the only party with a clear declared stand in favour of civil partnerships. Within MEUSAC (the Malta-EU Steering and Action Committee), we are also the only political party which fully supports the proposed anti-discrimination directive proposed within the EU. I invite all those who wish to contribute further to our policy-making and to take part in our forthcoming debates on the issue in the process to update our electoral manifesto.”

Yvonne Arqueros Ebejer, AD Spokesperson for Civil Rights, added, “The struggle of LGBT activists and movements is part of the struggle for a more equal and inclusive society – which is ultimately what democracy should be all about. The LGBT community has made many victories – yet many challenges remain, especially in societies such as Malta. In some other societies such as Uganda and Iran, basic gay rights are still not existent, and being gay can actually lead to the death penalty. As Greens we support the LGBT community. The other parties should make their position about the Eu anti-discriination directive crystal clear rather than just pay lip service to the issue during election campaigns only to forget about it the next day.”
