A new collection of paintings by the well known Gozitan artist, George Scicluna, will be exhibited between the 21st of May and the 19th of June 2010 at Heritage Malta, Merchants Street, Valletta.

The paintings were painted over the last two years and are inspired by the sculptures and statues of the great Renaissance master Michelangelo Buonarroti. Scicluna applies the “deconstructive” method to analyse some of the prominent sculptures of the master. Deconstruction was widely popular in the fields of philosophy and literary criticism as a method of analyzing texts.

Scicluna’s deconstruction of the Michelangelo’s works involves a thorough study and investigation of the way these statues are construed: in the sense that he wants to go down below what is merely trivial and reach the essence of these statues. What he finds as being essential is a presence of energy, force, dynamics and movement. The process of deconstruction involves the bringing out of these elements on the canvas.

The paintings manifest Scicluna’s distinctive original thinking and his method of conceiving art.

This exhibition represents an important stage within Scicluna’s artistic career. It is a genuine investigation of the genius of Michelangelo.
