Speaking on Saturday, Supt of Public Health Prof Charmaine Gauci, confirmed the figures of 14 new Covid-19 cases reported, with 2 recoveries.

One of the new cases is a 40-year old Gozitan male who works in the public sector, he was asymptomatic.

9 of the 14 new cases were asymptomatic, with 6 of those being healthcare workers at Mater Dei.

The 14 cases involve a retail outlet worker, a take-away worker, healthcare workers, public sector workers and private sector worker. Contact tracing is being carried out.

Prof Gauci said that there are 546 cases, 90 are currently active, 450 recovered and there has been 6 deaths. There were a record 1,727 tests taken in the past 24-hours, and the total so far is 49,231.

She added that they are finding the asymptomatic cases because of the rising number of tests being carried out on a daily basis.

There are 3 patients in Boffa Hospital and in St Thomas, 3 at Karin Grech and 2 in IDU at Mater Dei.

Prof Gauci stressed that anyone experiencing symptoms, even if the test comes back negative, should keep in isolation. This is because the “viral load” may not be high enough to be detected at that point. She added that the R factor is still under 1.

She again urged the public to wear masks when shopping or on public transport and to maintain social distancing measures.

Prof Gauci also made it clear that social distancing measures will be the rule throughout this Covid-19 pandemic.

Prof Gauci stressed the fact that anyone who is in a group in public is putting themselves at risk. “The police have enough to do,” she said, “they are doing their duty and we should be responsible enough to follow these measures.”
