The Dump: Soon to become recreational space and clean air

On Thursday the Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, together with the Minister for Resources and Rural Affairs, George Pullicino, visited the Qortin dump at Xaghra, just days after MEPA approved the permit for rehabilitation of the dump.

The company’s CEO Vince Magri Wasteserv talk about the advance already made since the site was been closed. He explained that now that the permit has been issued for the dump rehabilitation, works will start to transform the site into a recreational and adventurous place for the whole family, with innovative games for both children and adults and enjoyable places to savour the beautiful views that this place offers.

The Minister for Gozo said that continuing the process of rehabilitating the dump, is a concrete step in the commitment of government to meet Gozo’s goals of sustainable development. “What was the biggest wound on the environment of the island of Gozo, will be replaced as a place of natural beauty, which can offer recreation for local families,” added the Minister. She explained how through collaboration with MRRA and WasteServ, the Ministry is engaged in other environmental projects, such as the establishment of the Civic Amenity Site, Waste Transfer Station and other projects of afforestation. With further works planned to meet the objectives of the eco-Gozo vision.

The Minister for Resources and Rural Affairs George Pulliicno, said that this is another step in fulfilling an election promise, that such closed landfills are rehabilitated and returned to people as open space for the recreation of Maltese and Gozitan families. Minister Pullicino added that Wasteserv was continuing the ongoing work to extract the harmful gases. Thus plant has bee installed with an investment of over €1 million which has already treated over 340 tons of carbon dioxide gas.

The rehabilitation of the dump is utilising an investment of approximately €3.5 million, which is financed from European funds and through this rehabilitation of the closed landfills people will enjoy more recreational open space and cleaner air.
