The 3rd edition of Leone Goes Pop was a feather in the hat for the Leone Band, who last Sunday, the 6th of June, wooed thousands of people gathered in Victoria’s main square It-Tokk.
Themed as ‘You Can Leave Your Hat On!,’ Leone Goes Pop, was performed in collaboration with the Victoria Local Council as part of Victoria City Day celebrations. Guest singers Mario Caruana and Nadine Axisa, compere Jean Claude Micallef and conductor Colin Attard together with the bandsmen put on a two-hour bonanza of pop music and high calibre entertainment, which included a healthy dose of humour, enough to keep the standing audience engaged and motivated to stay until the very end.
The musical evening was embellished with a measure of up beat humoristic acts to entertain the audience. Such was the case when the band interrupted the compere and conductor with the theme of You can leave your hat on, instructing each of them to wear a hat. In turn, Colin Attard made each of his bandsmen wear a hat to perform Joe Cocker’s medley, which also included a mock-strip tease. And as if it that was not enough, Jean Claude Micallef made Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono and Parliamentary Secretary Chris Said wear a gala hat and a construction hat respectively! This was then followed by all distinguished guests including PL Deputy Leader Toni Abela and PN General Secretary Paul Borg Olivier, Victoria Mayor Samuel Azzopardi and Acting President Anton Tabone. Top hats, mini hats, gala hats, bathing caps, berets, police hats, construction hats… you name it, they wore it, all in good spirit and taste!
The Leone Band presented a rendition of some of the most known songs by Eric Clapton, Country and Western, The Beatles, Eros Ramazzotti, Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame, Elton John, Michael Jackson and The Village People, together with the songs Unchained Melody, New York, One Moment in Time and Strangers in the Night. Additionally, the concert included the song, Heal The World, sung by both singers which saw the grand entrance of a children’s choir.
This third edition of Leone Goes Pop was deemed to be an outstanding success. A repeat performance, to be performed in aid of Puttinu Cares will be held in Marsalforn Bay, Gozo, on Tuesday, July the 27th, 2010 at 9pm. Seats will be on a first-come-first-served basis and entrance is free of charge.
