The Malta Environment & Planning Authority (MEPA) has said that it would like to remind all operators responsible for the transport of waste about the requirement to implement the provisions of Waste Management (Activity Registration) Regulations as published by Legal Notice 106 of 2007.

They said that all vehicles carrying wastes are required to register with MEPA and obtain clearance for such activities from the Environmental Permitting and Industry Unit. The aim of this registration is to ensure that all vehicles/vessels that are carrying wastes are up to standard and that no wastes are released into to the environment through spillages, fly tipping or deposition of such wastes in locations not permitted for such use.

MEPA will be conducting investigations and monitoring of movements of waste and they said that the public is invited to report any fly tipping on Mepa’s emergency service number 2069 9595. Moreover, all entities issuing contracts for the collection and transport of waste are reminded that as waste generators, they have a duty of care to ensure that any company or individual assigned a contract for the transport of wastes must utilize vehicles registered with MEPA for the transport of that particular type of waste.

Further information related to waste carrier registration and waste management in general may be accessed through MEPA website on www.mepa.org.mt.
