The Church’s environmental commission has said in a report that the Church is against the Hondoq ir-Rummien Bay project stating that it is not sustainable.
The comission gave a strong reaction to the development saying that after they had looked over all the details of the proposed project, that they had come to the conclusion it would be hard to justify the claims that had been made that Gozitans would benefit in the long term from the project, as it would not conserve the natural beauty of the island, which is the the main draw for tourists.
Whilst in favour of the transformation of the quarry into a National Park, the commission said that the proposed development project would in fact lead to the destruction of Hondoq. While using the pretext of the need to clean up and rehabilitate the old quarry, it could also a danger of land speculation.
I would like to applaud the church commission for making a stand on the Hondoq project.
The church commission is confirming what has been said along the years by the thousands of objectors, that this project is to the detriment of Gozo not the salvation as the speculators are making it out to be.
Hondoq is very important for Gozo not just for the tourism sector but for the Gozitans and Maltese alike. This is one of the few remaining open spaces where one can relax in peace with nature.
It is an area where people do not just use Hondoq as a swimming area, but for walks, fishing, barbeques, snorkelling, diving, etc…
We as objectors strongly believe that Hondoq should remain for EVERYONE.
GOOD NEWS FOR THE PEOPLE OF QALA AND THE TOURISTS. HONDOQ-IR-RUMMIEN IS A BEAUTIFUL BAY, CLEAN UP THE QUARRY AND PLANT MORE TREES AND MAKE IT INTO A NATIONAL PARK FOR CHILDREN AND THEIR CHILDREN.

The Church commission had a great thought about how to safeguard the Hondoq Ir Rummien coastline.
Lets hope that next time when the church comments, it will be about the Nadur church project the one that has been constructed down the road to Ramla Bay, and it will be much nicer to revoke this permit
before it is too late as there is no need for this needless project.
