A reduction in the price of 29 medicines was announced today by the Parliamentary Secretary for Consumer Affairs, Chris Said. The Parliamentary Secretary had been in talks with the drug importers over the past weeks with the aim of decreasing further medications. These talks led to the importers reducing the prices of 29 medicines. The total amount of discounted drugs in the last two months has now reached 91
The reductions in drug prices will come into force immediately on new stocks bought from pharmacies, involving reductions of between 4 and 39 percent..
The prices of 7 medicines fell by between 4 percent and 10 percent. 17 fell between 11 and 20 percent and 4 medicines fell between 21 and 30 percent. A medicine used to lower the cholesterol level in the blood fell by almost 39 percent.
The new list of reduced price medicines includes a substantial number of drugs that are widely used. These include those for helping heart disease, hypertension, high cholesterol, ulcers and stomach acid, psoriasis, pain and various inflammations. Other medicines include antibiotics and others for people suffering from fits.
Among others the tablets Tenoretic (28 film-coated tablets x 100mg + 25 mg), taken by people with hypertension, have fallen by € 4.77 euros or 30 percent. The Losec MUPS (28 gastro-resistant film coated tablets x 20 mg), used by people suffering with ulcers or stomach acid, have fallen by € 11.60 or 19.9 percent. The Fucithalmic (eye- drops 5g), which is used against eye infections, by € 1.32 or 19.9 percent.
The list of drugs that are cheaper with immediate effect are as follows:Dr Said said that this development is another step that will lead to the ultimate objective, which is that the prices of medicines in Malta reflect their economic value. He went on to say that the Consumer and Competition Department had recently carried out around 315 inspections at pharmacies and that actions would continue to ensure that the reductions announced are put into effect.
