The Xaghra Feast Committee has issued a statement saying that their village feast will go ahead tomorrow as had already been planned, but without fireworks. They pointed out that the outside activities for Our Lady of Victories feast were cancelled on Sunday evening in respect of the vicitms families from Sunday’s Gharb fireworks factory explosion, which has now killed 5 people and left one severly injured.
The committee said that the fireworks factory was not part of the parish and that the victims did not come from the parish. The only connection between Xaghra and the factory was that the Xaghra fireworks committee had commissioned fireworks from the factory, the committee added.
The committee went on to say that the factory was also being used for the storage of fireworks produced in Malta until they were needed. All this was done with the relevant permits and according to law.
The central committee once again reiterated its sorrow at the loss of life and expressed it’s solidarity with their families.

I am quite simply lost for words, are we not all children of God and Gozo?
Since when did Xaghra become an independent republic and become completely detached from Gozo?
When were feast committees given the right to decide that we only mourn and show respect for people from our own village?
Why don’t those in authority make sure this does not happen?
Why are we not hearing from the Bishop or the Minister for Gozo?
All we are hearing at the moment is a deafening silence………
After spending two wonderful weeks in the village of Gharb with my family and friends may we offer our condolences to the family and villagers of Gharb in their loss in this tragic accident.
Our thoughts are with you at this sad time.
What a big shame. Where is the respect. If Nenu was kind enough to keep the fireworks stored in his factory, why the feast is not cancelled so as to show respect to their families. It’s a disgrace, everybody is against the feast.
I am from Xaghra, but living in Canada. Me too I do not agree with Xaghra committee, when it comes such a Tragic Accident like this, specially when they were working for Xaghra Fire Work Feast. They become part of Xaghrin also. Because they would be the once to give the Fire if everything went ok .. I think to show Solidatary respect for these 5 people is to cancel the feast. Feasts comes and goes every Year, but these 5 people will never come again. Human Nature tells you this and respect should be observed for them no matter whether they were from Xaghra or not. They worked for Xaghra Fire Work Feast. That makes them Part of Xaghra. Walter
I do not think the festa should have gone ahead.
As a resident of Xaghra I feel for the grief of the family and that they should have ended this Festa out of respect.

I find no words, it,s a big shame for Xaghra….
I live in New York City , shame on you Xaghra, selfish, lowlife.
Ahna Kattolici vera jew ta l-isem biss ? Sorpriza ghal l-ahhar ghad decizzjoni li hadu ta l-xaghra . Il-festa misshom waqfuwa . Ahna nies kattolici ta finta . Imisshom jisthu .fl-Istess hin naghti il-kondoljanzi lil familji tal-vitmi u nitlob ghal dak li ghadu jilghaba mal-mewt . R>I>P.
From the Netherlands , I think the least the Xaghra church feast show a bit of respect to these poor unfortunate people, we shall not be visitng your village , we had the same a few years back in the Netherlands -a town called Enschede when on the 13th.May 2000……22 people lost their lives including some firemen and no less then 947 people injured, when 100 tonnes of explosives blew to heaven and earth>>
Bojkott minn kullhadd lil Festa tax-Xaghra. Bojkott lil kumitat festi esterni tal-festa. Imisskom tisthu kullhadd jghid bikom li ghamiltu l-Festa. Meskom hrigtu biss il-vara u dawwartuha fil-Pjazza mela ghamiltu l-Festa. Fejn hu s-sens religjuz li ghandkom ghal hutkom. Tafu li mietet familja shiha!!!!!!!!!
Nahseb li l-Bambina aktar kienet tiehu pjacir li hassartu l-festa b’rispett lejn hutkom milli dan il-paganizmu kollu li ser taghmlu.
Minn jaf li kieku kien xi hadd minn tl-familja taghkom u ma kontux mix-Xaghra x’kontu tghidu? Kien x’kien il-vittma thallasx jew le r-rispett hemm ghandu jkun.
Bishop of Gozo please notice what you have in your diocesy and use your hard voice as usual and do not stay calm.
