The first official meeting of the Gozo Regional Council was recently held in the historic Banca Giuratale where the Victoria Local Council is situated. This important development in the regional autonomy of Gozo was reiterated in an inaugural speech held by the President of the Region, Samuel Azzopardi, who was elected to the post last October.
Dr. Azzopardi, who is also the Mayor of Victoria, stressed the need for the Regional Council to be further strengthened, while he also reminded those present of the regional autonomy achievements Gozo had made over the past years, he also mentioned the fiftieth anniversary next year of the Gozo Civic Council. He went on to appeal to those present, namely the Mayors of Gozo, who are members of the Regional Council, to do their utmost to enhance the council.
The Gozo Regional Council will at first be responsible for the local enforcement system and the street lighting. It is already looking forward to other projects such as the membership of European Regions for Youth and protocols with other regions of the European Union.
The Regional council is being temporarily hosted by the Victoria Local Council in the Banca Giuratale and will soon be moving to new offices.
