Final preparations are underway for the eighth solo exhibition by Gozitan artist Mark Sagona, which will be held in Paris between November 2010 and January 2011.

The venue of the exhibition is the Maltese Embassy on the Champs Elysees. The artistic initiative, which is being organised by the Embassy, forms part of a programme embarked upon by the Ambassador of Malta to France, H.E. Dr Mark A. Miggiani, to promote Maltese Art and Culture in the French capital. The official inauguration of the exhibition will take place on the 3rd November.

The twenty-one semi-abstract exhibits, collectively entitled L’Âme d’une Île (The Soul of an Island), are a homage to Malta’s rich cultural legacy and seek to capture and highlight the unique spirit of the Maltese Islands. All the works were produced in recent months and are produced in acrylic in canvas. Typical of the artist’s style, they are rich in abstract qualities, vibrant chromatic qualities and strong contrasts and textures that result from the application of translucent layers of paint.

To mark the event the artist is publishing a full-colour catalogue which has been entirely designed by Daniel Cilia. Mr Cilia has also been responsible for the photography of the exhibits. The authors of the catalogue are Professor Mario Buhagiar, Head of the Department of History of Art at the University of Malta, and Ms Charlene Vella M.A., the art critic of The Sunday Times who have provided a critical analysis of Sagona’s artistic development since his first personal exhibition in 2000 and a study of the present collection.

The exhibition, co-ordinated by the Ambassador’s wife Caroline Miggiani, is being made possible through the full collaboration of the Maltese Embassy in Paris, and the generous support of the Ministry for Gozo, Middlesea Valletta Life and Express Trailers.

Mark Sagona has today established himself as one of the leading artists of his generation in Malta. In the last few years he put up various personal exhibitions, including a major show at the National Museum of Fine Arts in 2008. His works have been also shown in Rome, and, earlier this year, at the European Parliament in Brussels. Many works by Mark Sagona are scattered in various European countries, the USA and Australia.
