1. Nadur Local Council, in collaboration with Caritas Malta, recently organised a candle-lighting event as part of the Caritas campaign ‘Ilqa l-Isfida: Gib il-Faqar fix-Xejn’ (Accept the challenge: eradicate poverty) to mark International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.

Nadur joined other European countries in the ‘Ten Million Stars’ event organised by Caritas Europa.

Parishioners took candles to be lit during the activity at St Peter and St Paul Square. A collection was also made to channel funds to people living in poverty.

The Nadur Youth Council collected signatures throughout the day for a Caritas Europa petition against poverty and social exclusion, which will be presented to the European Commission.

Guitarists Joe Portelli and Joseph Azzopardi sang various love songs, while Joseph Attard gave a Power Point presentation on poverty.

Nadur mayor Ms.Miriam Portelli said the event was intended to show solidarity with people in need, not only in their locality, but also in Malta and elsewhere.

2. “Chasing the passion” is the name of an art exhibition by Carmel Theuma currently on display at the Cittadella Centre for Culture and the Arts in Victoria.

The exhibition consists of 38 pieces mostly in oils on canvas. Different subjects such as figurative art and of places in Gozo feature in this exhibition. This is Theuma’s 3rd solo exhibition and as the title indicates, Theuma keeps chasing his passion for art and lets his imagination roam into reality, surrealism and fantasy.

The exhibition is open between 10.00 a.m. and 3.00 p.m. until Thursday, November 4.

3. The feast of Jesus of Nazareth was celebrated in Xaghra. Gozo Bishop Mario Grech concelebrated Mass at 4.30 p.m. The Maranatha, The Guiding Light and Santa Klara choirs took part.

The Victory Band of Xaghra accompanied the procession, followed by an evening of entertainment, including a wine-tasting competition, a wine and pizza party and spot prizes.

4. Maria Assunta Tabone of Nadur recently celebrated her 100th birthday.

Ms Tabone was born in Ghajnsielem. She married Salvu in 1938 and went to live in Nadur where they raised a family of 12 children.

Mass was concelebrated at her house and attended by her nine living children.

Some members of the family came over from Australia and the United States of America for the celebration, which was also attended by neighbours and friends as well as Gozo Minister, Giovanna Debono and then Parliamentary Secretary Chris Said, who presented her with an icon and a crucifix respectively.

President George Abela sent Ms.Tabone a bouquet of flowers, while Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi sent her a silver tray.
