The stories covered in this weeks issue are:

1. A night vigil by Xaghra parish launched the summer-long celebration to mark the 2,025th anniversary since the birth of the Virgin Mary, the titular dedication of the parish church, culminating on September 8.

The restored titular painting was carried along the streets and a 90-minute vigil was held at the square, led by Xaghra archpriest, Mgr Carmelo Refalo, helped by members of the clergy.

Hymns were sung by the Voce Angeliche choir, under the direction of Grace Vella, and led by Stephan Attard. At the end of the programme, Paul Camilleri-Cauchi presented his logo, designed specifically for the celebrations, while restorer Manuel Zammit was presented with self-portrait while restoring the painting.

Artist Victor Agius donated an oval-shaped picture of the painting, a copy of which will be distributed to families as a remembrance. The vigil came to an end with a solemn blessing and the laying of flower bouquets by the various village groups and committees at the foot of the painting.

2. A young Maltese man, Anthony George Caruana, hailing from Xaghra was recently ordained as a priest in Scotland. Fr. Caruana was born on the 22nd of February 1982, the son of renowned Gozitan painter Anthony Caruana of Xewkija and Stella nee Camilleri of Victoria. He attended the Victoria Primary School and began his theological studies at the Gozo Seminary. After his intermediary year which he spent in the Edinburgh archdiocese he continued his theological studies at the Pontifical Scots College in Rome. He was ordained a deacon in April 2009 by Archbishop Mario Conti of Glasgow.

Fr. Caruana’s ordination to the priesthood was presided by Cardinal Archbishop Keith Patrick O’Brien at St Mary’s Cathedral, Edinburgh. Various relatives of the newly-ordained priests and even friends from the island of Gozo were present for both occasions. Fr Anthony will begin his priestly ministry in the parish of Falkirk within the archdiocese of Edinburgh.
