Alternattiva Demokratika – the Green Party welcomed last week’s proposal of the EU Commission to revise EU rules on data protection.

Henrik Piski, spokesperson for IT and Communication said, “The European Greens have always considered data protection as a fundamental right which must be strengthened. This includes better funding for data protection authorities and the closure of loopholes in legal protection of data.”

Michael Briguglio, AD chairperson, added, “‘Clear limits for storage, usage of personal data and purpose limitations can prevent uncontrolled profiling and data-mining by companies, surveillance agencies and political parties. In Malta both the Nationalist and Labour parties collect such data given that the data protection law has been tailor-made to suit their interests. A clear example of this is the information collected by PN and PL on non-voters in Malta, which is then used for electoral reasons. This infringement on the privacy of the individual should stop.”
