Nature Trust (Malta), in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Employment and the Family and the Ministry for Resources and Rural Affairs, together with HSBC Bank Malta and Wasteserv Malta Ltd hosted its annual EkoSkola Seminar.

EkoSkola is an international project, run by FEE (Foundation for Environmental Education), involving more than 8 million children spread over 47 countries. The project aims to help schools integrate a Local Agenda 21 strategy within their School Development Programme by adopting a participative whole school approach to the management and development of schools and their communities. Schools which manage to achieve this aim are awarded the prestigious Eco-Schools Green Flag – an eco-label of high school performance recognised around the world. This programme is run in Malta by Nature Trust (Malta) as the FEE Representative.

This programme was launched in Malta eight years ago with six pilot schools. Today the number of participating schools as reached 102. More schools are expected to join later on this year.

Apart from the empowerment to students as part of the eco schools process, Nature Trust (Malta) through the Ekoskola Programme now hopes to give a stronger focus to sustainable development issues.

Last Wednesday saw two schools in Gozo getting the Green Flag – Gozo College Xaghra Primary (renewal) and Gozo College Nadur Primary. In today’s event the following schools were awarded the Green Flag – St. Joseph School Blata l-Bajda, St. Joseph Mater Boni Consilii School Paola, St. Benedict College Kirkop Primary, St. Gorg Preca College Paola Primary A and St. Ignatius College Siggiewi Primary had their Green Flag award renewed. The new schools getting the award were St. Nicholas College Bahrija Primary, St. Francis School Birkirkara, St. Benedict College Mqabba primary, The Archbishop’s Seminary Secondary School Tal-Virtù, St. Francis Secondary Sliema, St. Benedict College Girls’ Secondary Tarxien and St. Thomas More College Zejtun Primary A.

Nature Trust (Malta) said it would like to thank S2C, JRS, and KOPIN for their contribution during the seminar’s workshops. Sustainability and social issues were the main topics addressed in this year’s seminar.

Nature Trust (Malta) today runs two other FEE Programmes in Malta – Young Reporters for the Environment and Blue Flag for Beaches. It hopes to launch the forth programme next year – the Green Key International Eco Label for Hotels.
