The Ministry for Gozo has announced that it has issued a funding scheme for projects related to the eco-Gozo programme, conducted by Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and voluntary groups in Gozo. Through this scheme, each NGO and voluntary organisation can benefit from a contribution of 95% of the total cost of up to € 50,000, for projects which enhance the sustainability of their locality

This scheme was announced during a conference given by the Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, where several members of NGOs and voluntary organisations were present. The Minister gave some examples of projects, such as tree planting etc. This scheme will also enable NGOs to participate actively in the implementation of the eco-Gozo project and more specifically in the short-term measures identified in the document “Eco-Gozo: A better Gozo Proposed action 2010-2012”

Applications for projects under this scheme will be accepted up to the 14th January 2011. In the proposal, applicants must explain how the project will be beneficial to Gozo and the Gozitan society. This aspect of the application will have an important impact on the decision of the committee in their evaluation.

The projects that will benefit from this scheme will be announced in February 2011, and will be implemented by November 2011.

“The Minister gave some examples of projects, such as tree planting etc.” So on the one hand they are cutting trees down all over the island of Gozo with the Ministry doing nothing about it and now they are handing out money for trees to be planted. One begins to wonder who is behind the decisions to cut down trees and who is receiving the money for replanting them!

What kind of trees are going to be planted —Wild trees as usual– and how about the 5000 citrus trees ta Ghajn Qasab Valley? Are these fruit trees going to be protected? from the ECO GOZO Minister?.
