Architect Andre’ Zammit, who has just published a biography of Sir Luigi Camilleri, will be giving a talk on this distinguished son of Gozo, entitled, ‘Sir Luigi Camilleri, a worthy son of Gozo,’ on Friday, the 18th of February, 2011 at 7.30pm, at the premises of the ‘Circolo Gozitano,’ 6 Sir Adrian Dingli Street, in Victoria.
This talk will cover not only Sir Luigi’s personal career but also the eventful years through which he lived. Sir Luigi Camilleri who lived almost a hundred years between 1892 and 1989 was a child prodigy who matriculated at thirteen years and graduated at twenty. At twenty-eight, he was one of the pioneer members of the Malta Legislative Assembly under the 1921 Self-Government Constitution, being returned on the first count as one of the four members of the Partito Democratico Nazionalista for Gozo, where he had established a very successful legal practice.
He was appointed Magistrate and later became a Judge and Chief Justice and was knighted. He was a member of the Judiciary for thirty-four years which is probably a local record in a turbulent period spanning the period prior to and after World War II and he was a central figure in several important cases.
Several historical cards of Gozo of the period that were sent by Sir Luigi will also be on display.
After the talk, Mr Zammit will be available to sign his highly readable biography which will be available at pre-publication price of € 20. This biography is mainly based on Sir Luigi’s personal papers and memorabilia, is written in a lively style and is profusely illustrated.
The talk will be in Maltese but interventions in English will be welcome.
This talk forms part of the ongoing programme of activities being organised the Circolo Gozitano.
