About 120 students at the Agius de Soldanis Girls’ Junior Lyceum and Secondary School, this week joined around 22,000 other students from around the world, and participated in two walks to commemorate World Water Day 2011.
These walks, which were organised by the Eco School Committee, were a show of solidarity with the children who live in developing countries around the world and who have to walk long distances every day to find water. During these walks, children along with their teachers carried a two litre bottle of water as well as collecting donations that will go towards improving health services in the rural district of Mtwara in Tanzania . Some children also carried posters with messages about the importance of water.
The Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, this morning met with the students who gathered in St. Francis Square in Victoria, after walking from their school along the streets of Victoria. The students also met up with Kikku, the mascot voice of children for eco-Gozo.
The Ministry for Gozo said that “water is a key resource that is given importance within the Government’s vision to make Gozo an ecological island. With the cleaning of areas for collecting rainwater in two valleys in Gozo in recent months, it is estimated that this year the storage of rainwater in Gozo will be increased by about 18,500 cubic meters. Preparatory work is also underway, with the assistance of the Malta Environment and Planning, to clean other water catchment areas in Ghasri, the Ramla valley and Marsalforn valley.”
