The Leone Philharmonic Society A.D. 1863 will be presenting the 4th edition of the pop series concert – Leone Goes Pop.

This open-air concert dedicated to pop music will be presented in Victoria’s Independence Square (it-Tokk), on Tuesday, the 7th of June 2011, a public and national holiday, at 8.30pm.

Little did the Leone Band of Victoria know what a start it was to be, when it first presented its pop concert four years ago. The first Leone Goes Pop concert started off with a set of light stands, a few scores of chairs and a dozen pop tunes. Four years on, it has turned into a thorough musical spectacle, complemented with a visual show and lighting effects. It has developed into a respected musical export, witnessed by crowds of people in Victoria, Marsalforn and Valletta’s Presidential Palace. An added value was appended to it, as it was turned into a philanthropic event, raising funds for Puttinu Cares last year.

The first three editions of Leone Goes Pop, with their various repeat performances, were spiced with anything that tests one’s limit of imagination, from mock-strip tease, to a dancing conductor, from hydraulic and rooftop fireworks to the berthing of a real-life boat with dancing sailors aboard. As this fourth edition sashays through the decades of popular music, with music of the future and music of the past, one is left to imagine what is in store. Suffice it to say that amongst others, Sinatra, Bon Jovi, Vianello, Armstrong, Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga and no less than Beethoven himself will come to life in this pop concert!

The Leone Band under the direction of Colin Attard, will be accompanied by singers Mario Caruana, Neville Refalo and Thea Garrett. Radio presenter Carlo Borg Bonaci will host the show. Leone Goes Pop will also feature dancers from the Naupaca Dance Academy. It is being produced in collaboration with the Victoria Local Council on the occasion of Victoria City Day, with kind help of Citadel Insurance and Cisk. Seating is free on a first-come-first-served basis.
