The Maltese Association of the Order of Malta, the St John’s Co-Cathedral Foundation and the Metropolitan Chapter have invited the Laudate Pueri Choir of St George’s Basilica, in Victoria, to present a concert in aid of charity at St John’s Co-Cathedral this Thursday, the 23rd of June 2011. The Vocal Charity Concert is being held under the distinguished patronage of H.E. Dr George Abela, President of the Republic of Malta.
The connection of the St George’s Basilica Choir of Gozo, with the Maltese Association of the Order of Malta goes back quite some time. So much so that the Choir said the Association has “adopted” the Choir, inviting the Choir to sing during significant events during the year. This time the Choir is interpreting some of the finest sacred polyphonic motets for which it so well-known and appreciated, both locally and overseas. The programme includes the Kyrie from the famous Palestrina’s Missa Papæ Marcelli, which in all probability is being performed for the first time at St John’s, apart from other motets by De Victoria, Balzano, Bartolucci and Vella.
The Laudate Pueri have recently presented a recital of some of Dun Karm’s, as he is affectionately still known, best loved hymns at St John’s Co-Cathedral. The recital, which has been relayed on national television station, served as the official presentation of the CD Tina l-Hlewwa which the Choir has recorded on commission from the Office of the Prime Minister to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the demise of the national poet.
The Roman school of interpretation which the Choir has introduced and promoted on the islands and which is synonymous with the Papal Choir known as the Cappella Sistina, underscores the primacy of the sacred text and touches upon each and every nuance of the Latin words. This style of interpretation which is so particular to Catholic liturgical singing is being slowly but surely adopted by choirs in Northern Europe, particularly the United Kingdom, where it is referred to as the “continental” style. The hallmarks of this school of singing are elegance, lightness of touch and clarity of the sound.
Thursday’s concert starts at 7.30pm. Entrance is free of charge. Donations for the worthy cause are kindly solicited.
