A couple from Gozo won two return Air Malta tickets to London, including accommodation, for six nights. Mr and Mrs Scerri from Marsalforn were the lucky winners of a lottery held by the National Statistics Office for their participation in the 2010 Survey on Income and Living Conditions (SILC). When presenting the prize at the NSO today, Michael Pace Ross, Director General, thanked them for their participation in the survey and highlighted the important role of respondents in such surveys.

The SILC is an annual enquiry providing indicators on poverty, income distribution, material deprivation and social exclusion. Through the analysis of SILC data, the NSO identifies which categories of society live in inadequate conditions and measures their extent. The survey is carried out simultaneously in all EU Member States, coordinated by Eurostat.

The SILC was carried out in Malta for the first time in 2005 among private households in Malta and Gozo, and involves interviewing a number of households for four consecutive years. This enables the identification of changes related to income and living conditions that may occur from year to year. Consequently, the success of SILC primarily depends on the timely cooperation and response of selected participants.

Successive participation in this survey automatically entitles households to inclusion in a lottery.
