The latest satellite signal, received yesterday afternoon by the British Trust for Ornithology, places Martin the Cuckoo as being near Messina.
This is a significant development as it confirms that he is taking the route which could lead him to Malta. In fact, it is possible he could be passing through Malta today and he may even stop over to rest.
Martin had spent the previous few days in the Milan area before making this move to Messina. Another of the tagged Cuckoos, Chris, is still in the Ferrara area of Northern Italy and it is possible that he too will travel this way any day now. Both Cuckoos have chosen the Central Mediterranean Flyway, on which Malta lies, to migrate south.
Two other Cuckoos have already reached Africa: one took the Western Flyway over Spain and Gibraltar, while the other braved a sea crossing just north of Rome. Only one Cuckoo fitted with a satellite tag as part of the project remains in England and has yet to migrate.
