Gozitan fish landings sees significant rise in 2nd quarter

Figures from the National Statistics Office show that fish landings in the second quarter amounted to 403,199 kilograms, an increase of 21.7 per cent over the comparative quarter last year, although the two dominant species caught during the period, Blue Fin Tuna and Swordfish, decreased by 34.7 per cent and 7.7 per cent respectively. Similarly, the wholesale value of total fish landings went up by 1.1 per cent to €2,156,024.
Fresh fish landings by Gozitan fishermen amounted to 140,309 kilograms (+226.3 per cent) during the second quarter, mainly attributable to a significant rise in Mackerel landings (+586.5 per cent). Gozitan fishermen generated €211,238 in wholesale value, an increase of 12.8 per cent over the second quarter of 2010.
Total landings by Maltese fishermen amounted to 262,890 kilograms, 8.8 per cent less than the second quarter of 2010. A drop was registered in Blue Fin Tuna (-34.5 per cent). The wholesale value of fresh fish landings increased marginally from €1,944,210 in the second quarter last year to €1,944,786 in the quarter under review. Fish landings by Maltese fishermen include landings by foreign-flagged vessels.
The quarterly ‘All Items’ fresh fish price index for the second quarter stood at 119.20 points, a decrease of 24.1 points (-16.8 per cent) over the comparative period in 2010. The ‘All Items’ fresh fish volume index, stood at 120.64 points, up by 21.5 points or 21.7 per cent increase over the first quarter of 2010 ?



























I think it`s time to give the environment a bit of time !
Otherwise the sea is empty and totally demaged !
I `m twice a day under water and trust me , the last 7 years are very fateful for the population of a huge of under water species .
It`s not the only a problem from the shore , NO ! – the whole sea .
Stop Fishing for min 3 years in the med sea . Not enough , but a step in the right way !
And – i don`t eat a lot of fish . The tourist will understand this as well !
Use EU money for this project – to help the local fishermen .
NOT THE BIG COMPANIES the catch and destroy everything !
