This year, the Car Free Day will be organised on Sunday, the 18th of September 2011. Six Local councils and three voluntary organisations will organise sports, cultural and artistic activities in the streets of the respective localities.

In preparation for this campaign, the Local councils and volunteers were invited to submit proposals in organizing activities during the Car Free Day. A total of 20 proposals were submitted by municipalities and voluntary organisations. The proposals include activities in organising sporting events linked to the promotion of sustainable mobility without cars like walking, cycling and running, organisation of cultural events like artistic exhibitions and road shows related to the theme of the Car Free Day, with recreational activities for all the family.

After evaluation, a number of proposals were selected by an interministerial committee which had the task of making the necessary preparations for the campaign. The proposals selected are from the Local Councils of Nadur, Mellieha Imgarr, Kalkara, Hamrun and Santa Lucija as well as voluntary organisations: Friends of the Earth, Don Bosco Oratory (Gozo) and Inspire Foundation.

The funds amounting to €24,000 were given by Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism, Environment and Culture, Mario de Marco and Parliamentary Secretary for Consumer, Competition Fair, Local Councils and Public Consultation, Chris Said.
