One of the eleven projects that are benefiting from the scheme launched by the Ministry for Gozo in aid of Local Councils and Administrative Committees of localities in Gozo, is the proposed ongoing project in Marsalforn of the reconstruction of traditional rubble walls known as ‘hitan tas-sejjieh.’ This scheme is financed by funds allocated by the Government in accomplishing the 2010-2012 action plan linked to the implementation of the eco-Gozo vision.The project proposed by the Administrative Committee of Marsalforn includes the rebuilding of rubble walls in areas of Marsalforn known as il-Qbajjar and Triq Wied l-Infern. The Minister for Gozo, Giovanno Debono, visited the site where the work has now started on excavating and replacing the foundations on parts of the walls. Besides making the area more attractive and helping to maintain the characteristic environment of the island, these walls are functionally linked to the conservation of soil.

The Minster for Gozo thanked the Management Committee for their participation in this scheme and explained that similar projects in other localities will be under way in the near future, helping to conserve a number of rural areas and the enviroment around the island that is such a characteristic of the tourism product in Gozo.

The positve response for the scheme from several local councils in Gozo was welcomed by the Minister and eight local councils and three Management Committees will be conducting 13 projects. Between them they’ll be eligible for financial assistance amounting to over € 660,000 with a maximum of € 70,000 per project.

Most projects to be carried out by these Councils in the eco- Gozo vision, include among others, projects related to environmental issues such as cleaning valleys, the use of lighting systems to reduce electricity consumption, as well replacement of vehicles to reduce emissions of toxic gases.
