An agreement has been signed between the Ministry for Gozo and the University of Malta to continue the studies on the Punic shipwreck located off the coast of Xlendi.

Through this agreement, the Government said that it is committing €140,000 to further research on the shipwreck.

During the signing, Minister for Gozo, Clint Camilleri, said that this discovery deserves all the attention to continue to shed more light on how our ancestors lived, socialised and traded.

“The Government is continuing to fund this exploration which yields surprising results and will certainly be of help to historians and academics, both local and international, while this discovery continues to stimulates interest abroad,” said the Minister.

He added that the Government remains committed to this unique exploration in the Mediterranean and hopes that the dream of many, that of eventually lifting and exhibiting it, will succeed in the coming years.

Professor Alfred Vella, Rector of the University of Malta, said that this research is an honour for the University and continues to support its mission as in a concrete way the University is showing its presence in the heart of society.

The Ministry said that this agreement will ensure that research work on this Punic shipwreck is continued over the next four years where conservation, documentation and research work will be carried out inter alia by a team of local experts led by Professor Timmy Gambin at the University of Malta.
