A statement from the Government this morning said that the Prime Minister, Dr Lawrence Gonzi, had this morning spoken on the telephone with the chairman of the Libyan Transitional Council, Mahmoud Jibril. The Prime Minister “congratulated the Libyan people on its march towards freedom and respect for human rights.”

The Prime Minister said again that the Council had Malta’s “support for the rebuilding of Libya as a modern and democratic country based on freedom, justice and human rights.” He went on to say that the Maltese people “were close to the Libyan people during this important moment of their history.”

The statement said that Mahamoud Jibril had thanked the Prime Minister in particular for his support over the past months as well as the people of Malta and looked forward to re-building relations between the two countries.
