Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna has inaugurated the new Auditorium at the Lascaris War-Rooms in Valletta in collaboration with Bank of Valletta. The Auditorium airs a 20 minute movie highlighting Malta’s role in the allied forces war-effort during World War II that complements visits to the Lascaris War Rooms.

The Lascaris War Rooms complex originates from the early stages of WW2 when an old communications tunnel was converted into a Sector Operations Room by the Royal Engineers for Royal Air Force use. From here the movements of enemy aircraft could be tracked and plotted on a large map to facilitate air and ground defence coordination. With the intensity of the war, more space was excavated to make more room underground for communications and radar tracking facilities.

Edward Muscat Azzopardi, Head Marketing at Bank of Valletta accompanied Mario Farrugia, CEO at Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna in a screening of the historic movie and a tour of the Lascaris War Rooms.

“The restoration of the Lascaris War Rooms is one of the largest ever projects undertaken by Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna,” said Mr Farrugia. “The site itself is also of great historic importance in having been the island’s defense nerve centre for almost three decades. The FWA is hugely satisfied by the results so far achieved in bringing this one time ultra secret defensive complex back to life, and this would not have been possible without the continuous help of Bank of Valletta.

“The conservation of Malta’s Heritage is one of the main pillars of Bank of Valletta’s Community Programme”, said Mr Muscat Azzopardi. “Thanks to Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna, all those who visit the Lascaris War Rooms are transported back to the early 1940’s to re-live a part of Malta’s rich History. Bank of Valletta is proud to be associated with this project through its partnership with the FWA.”
