The Gozo SPCA has said that it “was delighted to receive a good response for its Open Day to commemorate World Animal Day, “which took place on Tuesday the 4th of October, the Feast of Saint Francis os Assisi.

“Visitors dropped in through the day and discussed helping out at the Centre, neutering, micro chipping, overseas transport as well as various health issues. One puppy was rehomed, after a successful trial period. Another puppy was chosen for rehoming in a couple of weeks by new residents on the island. Sponsorship was also taken out on a dog that is in need of lifelong medication.” Following this positive response, a spokesperson said that the “Society was considering having an open day on a regular basis.”

World Animal Day was started in 1931 at a convention of ecologists in Florence as a way of highlighting the plight of endangered species. Since then it has grown to encompass all kinds of animal life and is widely celebrated in countries throughout the world. October the 4th was chosen as World Animal Day as it is the Feast Day of St Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals.
