During Freshers’ Week at university, which was held on campus between the 3rd and 7th of October, Youth For The Environment (Y4TE) lead the Endangered Animal Adoption Campaign. This was basically a way to promote awareness to students regarding the grave situation that a wide variety of species around the world find themselves in – the risk of extinction.

Three endangered animals were selected from the long list of threatened species and students at Freshers’ Week were asked to vote for the one they wanted Y4TE to adopt. This year, the animals short-listed for the campaign were the Przewalski’s Horse, the Sea Turtle, and the Emerald Hummingbird. Each animal is classified as ‘critically endangered,’ which is why they were considered in this campaign.

This is not the first time that Y4TE has held this campaign, last year, also during Freshers’ Week, a different set of endangered animals had been selected and students voted for the one they wanted to see adopted. The result of that voting session was Y4TE adopting the Amur Leopard through WWF (World Wildlife Fund) as it was the animal which had received most votes.

The votes for this year’s session have been counted and the animal with most votes has been identified. The results are as follows:

Przewalski’s Horse: 111 votes

Sea Turtle: 156 votes

Emerald Hummingbird: 65 votes

The Sea Turtle will be adopted in the name of the University of Malta and Youth For The Environment through WWF.

Y4TE said that it is pleased with the positive attitude that students showed to the campaign and their eagerness to have their say in the campaign, and would like to thank everyone for their support and participation in the cause.
