GO has teamed up with local educators and is playing an active role in the drive to ensure that Malta has a clean, reliable water supply in the future. In line with its ongoing commitment to enhance the quality of life for the local community, GO recently sponsored a booklet aimed at making children more conscious of water problems locally and globally. Further, spurred on by Catch the Drop campaign, GO will be launching save-water awareness campaigns for its employees and customers.

‘Catch the Drop’ is an educational water-conservation campaign that promotes more efficient use of water and its importance in all aspects of life. The campaign will cover to all state and non-state schools – primary and secondary – with a special focus on a select number of schools. The Ministry for Resources and Rural Affairs is running this well-thought out campaign that has, since its inception in February 2010, reached various schools nationwide and will eventually extend to homes and villages.

Last year’s focus was on 17 schools along the Wignacourt Aqueduct Route – Rabat to Valletta – while this year’s focus includes about 30 schools that lie along the Pembroke Reverse Osmosis Route – the underground ‘aqueduct’ – from Pembroke to Mosta. A ‘Moving Drop’ made of recycled containers travels from one of the schools on the route to another, encouraging students to post into it their water-saving tips.

The booklet contains students’ water-tips from last year’s campaign along with the students’ winning posters – and much more. It also promotes a must-do attitude towards water-conservation via fun water activities and a competition, along with a ‘learn, think act’ page encouraging children to watch the Catch the Drop DVD and relate to issues such as water scarcity.

“We are delighted to be sponsoring this intelligent and inspiring educational experience which underpins our efforts to promote the educational development of the community in which we operate,” Vanessa Macdonald, Manager of Public and Media Relations/Corporate Communications at GO, said.

“GO is indeed proud to be joining forces with the team players of this amazing educational project. And I have no doubt that our employees and even our customers will strongly support water conservation initiatives,” she said.

Speaking about the campaign, MRRA advisor, Mary Rose DeBono said, “The primary aim of our campaign is to enhance awareness to the value of save water campaigns and the importance of water in all aspects of life. The Catch the Drop campaign hopes to encourage a change of mindset, attitude and practice in our students so as to create a ‘water-saving’ culture.”

The Catch the Drop booklet sponsored by GO is currently being distributed to all primary schools. GO is planning other initiatives to support the campaign.
