The Victoria Local Council has said that it is presently carrying out a number of projects around the area including maintenance work on the Tac-Cawla housing estate and the opening of a Customer Care Office on the ground floor of the Victoria Council building.
The Council is working on a project for a Customer Care Office. This will occupy the ground floor of the Banca Giuratale and once completed, the Mayor said, “will make the Local Council and its services more accessible to all members of the community.” The project has been made possible through another of the special schemes operated by the Parliamentary Secretariat for Local Councils.
Details on this and other projects that are being carried out were given during a meeting between Dr. Chris Said, Parliamentary Secretary for Consumer Rights, Fair Competition, Local Councils and Public Consultation and Victoria Mayor, Samuel Azzopardi as well as the local council. Following the meeting the Parliamentary Secretary visited some of the tasks and projects being undertaken by the Council.
Work on three streets in Victoria has been carried out through the Public Private Partnership scheme for residential roads operated by the Parliamentary Secretariat for Local Councils. They are Triq Wied Seqer, Triq Saghtar, and part of Tria Ganni Vassallo Street. The Parliamentary Secretary said that through this scheme, 277 roads on the Maltese islands have already been completed, 33 of which are located in Gozo.
The Mayor of Victoria explained that over the past two years, the rehabilitation project of St George’s Square has been taking place with the installation of new paving and lighting. Now a request for sealed tenders for a bronze fountain for the square has been issued, which closes on the 13th of January. The entire project, the Mayor said, was worth close to half a million euros.
A copy of the proposed general plan for St George’s Square, which was originally shown on Gozo News on the 23rd of November 2008 is shown below.
Four historical niches have also been restored around Victoria. The Mayor said that this work was took place with an investment of approximately €16,000, through the Scheme for the Restoration of Niches and Small Historical Places operated by the Parliamentary Secretariat for Local Councils. “The Tac-Cawla housing estate project is being carried out in collaboration with the Housing Authority, consisting of a maintenance programme of the common parts in the residential buildings as well as the upgrading of the areas around the estate with the construction of new pavements. Two bids have also been issued on this project and work around the estate is now in its final phase,” the Council said.
The Parliamentary Secretary reiterated the Government’s commitment in continuing to assist Local Councils undertake infrastructure projects including new roads and public spaces for the general enjoyment and improvement in the quality of life of residents. He explained that “in the four years of the government the allocation to Local Councils had increased by 33 percent. It is estimated that between them Local Councils had received €160 million. Councils have also been able to benefit from millions of euros in funding from the European Union. With the financial aid, the overwhelming majority of local councils have been able to carry out important projects for the benefit of the communities and their residents.”
