In a meeting held last Thursday by the General Contracts Committee, within the Ministry of Finance, the Economy and Investment, it was recommended that the financial proposals (prices) of the tender/s for the design, build and operation of the Gozo waste treament and transfer facility at tal-Kus, limits of Xewkija, should be published. The tender procurer is WasteServ Malta.

The recommended tenderer was Polidano Eco JV. The closing date for objections is Monday, the 16th of January. Unless any objection is received, the financial proposal (price) of the qualified tender/s will be opened and made public.

MEPA approved the full development permit for a waste transfer station and a civic amenity site at Tal-Kus, Xewkija, in May 2009.

The approval was given despite numerous objections over a number of years from the Xewkija and Sannat Local Councils, local Heritage Authorities, and NGOs, who argued that the development was within the Mgarr ix-Xini regional park.

The transfer station will cover an area of 13,600 square metres and a four storey building will house a material recycling plant to sort, store and then transfer hazardous and non-hazardous waste to Malta.
