The Victoria Local Council has said in a statement “that it was never its intention or was it ever discussed in council that the upper part of Republic Street from the cross roads to Savina Square be pedestrianised.”

The Council said it has never submitted any request to any competent authority to this effect.

“While it is in principle in favour of more pedestrian zones in Gozo,” the Council said it “believes that if the upper part of Republic Street and Savina Square are closed for traffic, the negative effects will outweigh the positive ones. The Council would like to affirm its position against the closure of the above mentioned streets for traffic.”

The Council continued by saying that it has also checked with the Ministry for Gozo and Transport Malta and they both confirmed that they have recieved no requests to this effect.

The Annual General Meeting of the Victoria Local Council is to be held tomorrow, Monday, the 6th of February 2012 at 7.00pm at the Local Council’s Administrative Office, Banca Giuratale, Pjazza Indipendenza. All residents are invited to participate.
