A ‘Cycle and Walk for Cancer’ aimed to promote physical activity as a prevention of cancer, is taking place this coming Sunday, the 26th of February, getting underway at 2.30pm
This event is being organised by the Gozo Helath Promotion unit at Gozo General Hospital, in collaboration with the Ministry for Gozo and the Gozo Cycling Club.
The meeting place is near Ta’ Hamet Church. There will be two different routes are being organised, one for walking and the other for cycling, but both start from the same point.
The walking route will go via Triq Ta’ Hamet, Wied tal-Ghejjun, Wied tal-Ghajn Hosna, Triq tal-Ghajjun, Triq it-Tafla and back to Ta’ Hamet Church.
The cycling route will to to Victoria, Salt Pans Marsalforn, Ta’ Pinu Ghasri and back to Ta’ Hamet.
The Emergency Response and Rescue Corps will provide assistance to cyclists and a service of bicycle rentals will be available near Ta’ Hamet Church.
According to scientists, low levels of physical activity may increase the risk of cancers, while physical activity reduces this possibility. People who cycle for 30 minutes per day are 13% less likely to get bowel cancer, 11% less likely to get breast cancer and 34% less likely to die of cancer (figures from Cancer Research UK).
