Xaghra Local Council in keeping with its tradition organisdr another edition of the village’s Carnival which was held on Saturday and Sunday, the 18th and 19th of February.
The first Carnival programme on Saturday, was held on in the square in front of Christ the King’s Church. The event started at 7.45pm with a small introductory speech by the comperes, Mr. Anthony Grech and Ms. Francesca Zarb who came from Malta specifically for this occasion.
The programme was mixed with dance by local companies including the Santa Marija Philharmonic Society dance company, Aurora Dance Company, the grotesque masks of the Don Bosco Oratory (Victoria Gozo), the grotesque masks of the Vizitazzjoni Philarmonic Society of Gharb and the Xaghra Folk Group.
As it is the tradition in the Xaghra locality, during Saturday’s programme, the traditional dance Il-Kumittiva was also presented together with the Kukkanja which was entered in the Maltese Carnival programme during the reign of the Order of Saint John.
The evening’s programme included also various Carnival competitions, including those for the best costume, the best decorated tractor and the best spontaneous costume. The event ended with a musical concert by the local band Desert Rose led by Marvic Gauci.
The second Carnival on Sunday started at 10.30am when the Victory Band of Xaghra played Carnival marches from Bambina Street to Victory Square.
The programme started at 12.15pm with the participation of the comperes, Mr Veronica and Joe Farrugia (popularly known as Id-Dulli). The activity included a defilé of four Carnival floats and dance by local companies including L-Ghaqda Dilettanti tal-Karnival, the company of Josephine and Odette Farrugia, Aurora Dance Company, the Santa Marija Philharmonic Society dance company, the Franciscan Sisters’ Primary School and the Xaghra Primary School amongst others.
The traditional Carnival dance, Il-Kumittiva, was also presented. For the benefit of the children, the Xaghra Local Council provided a bouncy castle service during the entire show.
The Council would like to thank all those who gave their contribute so that the Carnival 2012 activities in Xaghra turned out to be a huge success!
