January's industrial producer price index fell by 0.7%In January, the producer price index for total industry decreased by 0.7 per cent. This was the result of a decline of 3.0 per cent in intermediate goods, mitigated by an increase of 0.1 and 4.8 per cent in capital and consumer goods respectively. During this period, energy prices remained stable.

The total index of prices for the domestic market rose by 1.9 per cent. Whereas the consumer goods sector surged by 9.9 per cent, prices for intermediate goods for the domestic market edged down by 0.9 per cent. No price changes were recorded for energy and the capital goods sectors.

Overall, producer prices in the non-domestic market decreased by 2.5 per cent, in view of a decline of 3.1 per cent in the intermediate goods sector. The capital and consumer goods sectors both edged up by 0.1 per cent over the previous month.

Producer prices in respect of goods destined for the euro area declined by 2.7 per cent, resulting mainly from a decrease of 3.3 per cent in prices for intermediate goods. This was partially offset by a rise in prices of capital and consumer goods, both by 0.2 per cent.

Prices for goods destined for the non-euro area decreased by 0.9 per cent. This was due to drops of 1.4 per cent in intermediate goods and 0.1 per cent in prices for capital goods.

Year-on-year, producer prices for total industry declined by 4.2 per cent. During this period, producer prices for intermediate goods dropped by 9.6 per cent. On the other hand, prices for capital and consumer goods went up by 0.2 and 6.4 per cent respectively. Energy prices remained unchanged.

Producer prices for the domestic market went up by 2.6 per cent. This was due to price increases in the intermediate, capital and consumer goods sectors, which experienced price gains of 1.6, 2.2 and 11.9 per cent respectively.

During this period, producer prices for goods destined for the non-domestic market decreased by 8.5 per cent on account of a drop in prices in the euro area of 9.7 per cent. This was partly mitigated by an increase of 2.5 per cent in prices for goods destined for the non-euro area.
