Two main roads in Gozo, which have been rebuilt utilising EU funds, were inaugurated by the Prime Minister today. Also present for the inauguaration was Roads Minister, Jesmond Mugliett, and the Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono. Dr Gonzi said the two projects were a link in the chain leading to the government’s target to make Gozo a centre of excellence in the Mediterranean. The newly-built five kilometres of roads cost a total of €11.9 million.
Mgarr Road, running from Mgarr to Victoria, was financed by the EU’s Cohesion Funds whilst San Lawrenz Road, running from Victoria to San Lawrenz, was financed by the European Research and Development Fund.
During the construction of both roads, services including water, electricity, cable television and sewage pipes were passed separately from the roadway so that they will not need to be dug up when the repair or maintenance of such services is carried out.
Dr Gonzi said that in both projects, much emphasis was placed on landscaping, which was carried out by the Environmental Landscapes Consortium.
Can we stop referring to the Victoria – Gharb road as the Victoria to San Lawrenz Road?
Reality is that originally (as usual in Gozo) the plan was to rebuild the road from Victoria to San Lawrenz BUT the fact is that the services stopped at the Gharb/St. Lawrence junction.
Please stop taking Gozitans for a ride and explain why the EU Cohesion funds and/or the European Research and Development Funds were not fully utilised according to original plans.

Absolutely right Victor Galea. The road is not finished as declared. And at what price! Does the Government/Ministry/Gozitans have a duty to give all that the contractors want, or do the contractors have a pact with the Government/Ministry/Gozitans to give what they committed themselves to fulfill, win or loose money. If contractors can ask for more money would not the contracts/bids be futile – since they are not binding both sides? Logical?
