Gaulitana: A Festival of Music continues with two more performances lined up:
1. Secular Polyphony
Italian choir Coro Euphonios directed by Elia Orlando will perform several unaccompanied choral works ranging from the Renaiisance to the contemporary. The concert is being held on Sunday the 25th of March at the Xewkija Primary School Hall, Xewkija, in collaboration with the Xewkija Local Council. The concert commences at 7.00pm. 2. Festive Brass
The Fourtissimo Brass (trumpeters Jason Camilleri, Shirley Helleur, Andre Helleur and Don Gates) return to the festival with a concert of light secular works. This will be held at the Ministry for Gozo on Wednesday the 28th of March at 7.30pm. Last week the Festival featured in two more previously advertised events: The first event was ‘Jazzin’ it up’ where Maltese trumpeter Adrian (Russu) Brincat, accompanied by Lino Cauchi (piano) and Mario Abela (bass), delighted those who turned up at the Coffee Lounge of the Kempinski Hotel, San Lawrenz on Friday the 16th of March with a series of high quality jazz numbers. Those present for this late evening atypical concert could relax comfortably over a few drinks, indeed, it was a completely different concert to any of the others in this year’s edition of the festival. The second event, ‘Violins ….a cappella’ featured the Gaudos Duo in a concert at the Jesus of Nazareth Church, Xaghra on Sunday the 18th of March. Hungarian violinists David Land and Emese Toth exceptionally played a number of unaccompanied duets ranging from the Baroque to the 20th century. For the last number, a medley of British traditional Airs, Hornpipes & Reels, they were joined by guest Canadian guitarist Sean Gurd.
The substantial audience in attendance, led by Xaghra Mayor, Joseph Cordina – whose council was collaborating in the organisation of the concert – and Gaulitana artistic director, Mro. Colin Attard, enthusiastically reacted to the performers’ technical bravura with long bouts of applause.
