This year marks the 125th anniversary of the city of Victoria and to mark the occasion there are a number of events being held in celebration.

This coming Tuesday, the 26th of June, a new book is to be launched which has been commissioned by the Victoria Local Council, entitled, ‘Victoria A Portrait of a City.’

Victoria is the official name of the only city of the island of Gozo. On 10 June 1887, on the occasion of the Golden Jubilee of the accession to the throne of Queen Victoria of the British Empire, the town of Gozo was renamed Victoria and raised to the status of a city.

The city of Victoria embraces both Ic-Cittadella, the ancient city-fortress of Gozo, as well as Ir-Rabat, which developed as a town since very early times.

Victoria – a portrait of a City, with its 256 pages, more than 40,000 words, 300 references, and 500 photographs, vividly describes the story of the town and its people from the first human settlement in the Neolithic Period till the present times.

The book is edited by Charles Cini, written by Dr Joseph Bezzina with photography and design by Daniel Cilia and will be available from the Victoria Local Council Offices by the end of this month, at the price of €35.

The book launch will be held at the Gozo Public Library in Vajringa Street, Victoria starting at 7.30pm.
