A week since since turtle eggs laid in Gnejna Bay - NTMIn an update from Nature Trust Malta on the turtle nest site, the NGO said that the nest watch is underway and Nature Trust Malta has developed a roster to ensure that the the nest site is continually monitored by at least two volunteers at any one time.

“All volunteers have received a training pack including a Code of Conduct and regulations that must be adopted in order to ensure the safety of the nest. Trained volunteers will also be issued with a MEPA permit and formal identification badge, NTM said.

The overwhelming response from people who are willing to dedicate their time to this cause has been of immense help in ensuring that focused conservation efforts will protect the turtle nest over the next six to eight.

A temperature probe was added close to the eggs. This will measure sand temperature below the eggs and surface temperature. It can be read from a monitor inside a white box found outside the fence. All data is being compiled. This system is used in many countries where turtles nest. It will provide indication on the nest conditions under the sand and can helpto take action if conditions can get bad for the nest.

The Coordination team is set up of MEPA, MRRA, Mgarr LC, Police, San Lucjan Centre and NTM.
