The Gozo Tourism Association has said it is suggesting that a specific marketing campaign for the domestic market be launched to recoup the losses incurred in the domestic sector for Gozo.
The GTA said that it is also proposing that Government waive the 2012 licence fees of all Gozitan tourist establishments as a way of compensating for the losses suffered as a result of the road works that were carried out, or are still ongoing, in several areas of Gozo.
The Chairman of the Association, Mr Paul Scicluna, said at the AGM held earlier this year that incentive schemes for the domestic market together with the introduction of seasonal fares by the Gozo Channel Company would also increase the attraction of more domestic tourists. The GTA Chairman also stated that the Association would be continuing with its lobby for a reform in the self-catering licenses and standards, as well as for the collating of accommodation statistics in relation with this important accommodation sector on Gozo whilst also pointing out that the regionality and rurality of Gozo should be taken into consideration whenever schemes for touristic improvements are launched.
Tonio Fenech the Minister of Finance, the Economy and Investment said today the the Government is considering introducing several measures to compensate for the losses suffered by small and medium enterprises (SMEs), as well the tourism sector, due to the road works that were carried out, or are still ongoing across Gozo..
When compared with 2010 arrivals in Gozo from the domestic market in 2011 dropped by 1261.
Latest figures from the National Statistics Office show that when compared to the previous year, in April 2012 the total arrivals and nights in Gozo declined to 6,237
