Labour market data provided by the Employment and Training Corporation indicates that over a 10-year period, the full-time gainfully occupied population increased by 8.2 per cent.
These labour market data updates as compiled by the Employment and Training Corporation (ETC), broken down by the new NACE Rev. 2 classification, and compared to 2002, shows that full-time employment increased by 11,295 to 149,297 persons in 2011.
Full-time Employment
Over the decade, the economic activities which recorded the highest increases in employment were the Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (NACE 45-47) (+3,122) and Administrative and support service activities (NACE 77-82) (+2,921). On the other hand, full-time employment within the Manufacturing sector (NACE 10-33) decreased by 7,039 persons, or 26.2 per cent.
Private sector employment in 2011 increased by 18,177 persons or 20.2 per cent, while public sector employment decreased by 6,882 persons, when compared to 2002. Private sector employment increases were mainly recorded in the Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles sector (NACE 45-47) and in Professional, scientific and technical activities (NACE 69-75); +16.5 per cent and +75.5 per cent respectively.
Public sector employment within the Manufacturing sector (NACE 10-33) decreased by 2,819 due to a restructuring exercise over the period under review. Female employment increased by 10,830 persons over a decade, with the highest increase recorded in the Human health and social work sector (NACE 86-88).
Part-time Employment
Part-time employment increased by 20,862 persons over a ten-year period. The highest increase in employment was recorded in the Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (NACE 45-47) (+4,344 persons). Persons whose part-time job was their secondary occupation increased by 56.7 per cent while the number of persons whose part-time job was their primary occupation went up by 74.3 per cent.
