The Government said today that a sustainable tourism project that is currently being carried out by the Munxar Local Council in Xlendi is in “an advanced stage.”

This project is co-financed by the European Agriculture Funds for Rural Development programme with funds, amounting to around € 400,000, which were acquired with the assistance of MEUSAC the committee that supports local councils, NGOs and SMEs to apply for EU funds.

Full details of the project were given during a visit to the area by the Minister forJustice, Dialogue and Family, Chris Said and Xlendi Mayor, Joseph Sultana.

New pavements, with fixed tables and seating have been installed so that both locals and visitors may relax and enjoy the views of the area. A heritage trail between the tower and Xlendi is also part of the project. Areas of work already completed include the cleaning up of Sanap cliffs and the restoraton of of rubble walls. In the coming weeks work will begin on pathways at Sanap and the restoration of the emergency flour mill at Xlendi.

The Minister stated that last year MEUSAC helped five Gozitan Local Councils to acquire € 2.3 million through the European Agriculture Funds for Rural Development programme, apart from Munxar the other councils were Qala, Sannat, San Lawrenz and Gharb.

Minister Said explained that all these projects will help create jobs in areas such as agri-tourism, eco-tourism and cultural tourism. They will also help the locations continue to obtain funds for sustainable development. Projects for the restoration of historic and rural areas lead to more visitors and tourists visiting the locations and their attractions.

He also said that local councils were the largest beneficiaries of European funding through the assistance of MEUSAC. Over the last four years, MEUSAC helped Local Councils and NGOs acquire € 18 million from various European Union programmes, which are being implemented in 127 different projects.
