The Leone Philharmonic Society has tonight issued a statement refering to “the violent incident reported in the media. The incident involving a number of people allegedly took place in the Leone’s Band Club premises in Republic Street, Victoria and subsequently continued outside the club’s premises.”

The statement said that “whilst condemning the incident and the alleged violence which could have taken place, the Society would like to make it clear that, contrary to what was reported in the media and contrary to the impressions which were given, the incident was totally unrelated to the feast of Santa Marija which was celebrated over the past days in Victoria, Gozo.”

“First of all the bar housed within the Band Clubs’s premises is leased out to third parties and the disco which was taking place was actually being organised by the lessee who runs the same bar and not by the Leone Band Club,” the Leone Philharmonic Society said

“To make things clear, the Society does not organise discos during the five days of the feast of Santa Marija.” The Socity continued, “Indeed no bandsmen, supporters or other members of the Society were involved. Yet, other individuals – for reasons known to them – tried to specifically attribute these incidents to the feast of Santa Marija in a puerile attempt to mar the feast which as usual was celebrated calmly and peacefully in the heart of Victoria. This can be easily confirmed by the Police Authorities who supervised the celebrations.”

The Leone Band Club concluded by saying that it “sincerely hopes that next time round the facts would be verified before going to print to avoid a scenario where unfounded claims would be directed at an entity that was completely alien to what took place.”
