The third edition of the Xaghra Figs Festival is taking place on Saturday and Sunday, the 22nd and 23rd of September.

The Xaghra Local Council organises this annual festival with the aim of promoting Maltese figs and its produce.

Xaghra Council said that it is the only Maltese council which is a member of the ficusnet network which is a network of European towns and cities which produce figs as one of their typical products.

A delegation of sixteen people from the Comune of San Michele Salentino in Italy will also be present for this event. The Xaghra Local Council is twinned with this council in Italy.

This year, the festival will also include an international conference on methods of cultivation and uses of figs, which will take place on the Saturday morning in the ‘Dun Alwig Camilleri Hall’ in the Victory Band Club, starting at 10am. On Saturday evening, between 8.30pm and 10pm, there will be a musical concert by the band ‘The Voodoo Gurus’ in Victory Square.

The festival will conclude on Sunday with an interesting exhibition of fig produce and other typical products between 8.00am and 1.00pm in Victory Square. Those attending will have the opportunity to buy these products.

Among the exhibits will be biskuttini tar-rahal, carob syrup, local pies and other traditional food and sweets. The exhibition will be accompanied by traditional folk music by Ta’ Verna Folk Band and Xaghra Folk Group.

The Xaghra Local Council welcomes the Maltese and Gozitan public to attend this festival “which has now found a major place in the annual cultural calendar of Xaghra and of the whole island.”
