Yesterday at around 6pm the Operations Centre of the Armed Forces of Malta received a report that a fisherman who had departed on a fishing trip at 5am that morning had not returned and was overdue.
The AFM immediately established his last known position and dispatched its Search and Rescue Launch Melita I together with a Maritime Patrol Aircraft (King Air B200), to the area. Under the coordination of RCC Malta an extensive search was carried out south east of Malta with negative results.
The search effort recommenced this morning at 6am with a King Air fixed-wing aircraft, an AB212 helicopter from the Italian Military Mission and a patrol boat involved in the search.
The AFM said that no trace of the 58-year old man or his 13-foot boat have been detected so far.
Operations continue.
