Six young Maltese film makers participated in the Berlin International Literature Festival, in Germany, a few weeks ago.
The Maltese representatives in this festival included Jean-Pierre Briffa, Claudia Cachia, Gian Luca Mercieca, Matthew Muscat Drago, Kathleen Pearson and Darryl Schembri, who have just completed their studies in Media (Moving Image) at the MCAST Institute of Art and Design. They presented six experimental short films dealing with the intertwining of secular daily life and religion, as part of the festival’s section ‘Europe Now.’
The films produced were inspired by a module in experimental film production, which forms part of the students’ degree studies at MCAST. After the screening, three of the young filmmakers went on stage, to discuss their experience during the films’ production and to answer questions by the audience.
The students were accompanied by Stephen Vella, the Institute of Art and Design director. Prof Veruschka Götz, from the Institute for Printed Media at Mannheim University of Applied Sciences, and Prof Hartmut Wöhlbier, Head of the Institute for Interactive Media at the same university, also assisted the six filmmakers during the films’ production and their screening in Berlin.
The International Literature Festival Berlin is one of the biggest annual literature events in Germany, presenting new talents alongside recognised masters of world literature. Every year it includes about 180 events in 11 days, presenting over 150 authors and artists, with works including prose, poetry, children’s and youth literature, political discussions, film adaptations of literature and more.
