Gozo Day celebrations taking place in Victoria this evening

Gozo Day is being celebrated today, Sunday, the 28th of October. Continuing on from the celebration which took place on Friday, this special day commemorates 214th anniversary of when Gozo was liberated from the French occupation in 1798, as a result of which for a 22-month period, Gozo gained complete autonomy under the leadership of Archpriest Saverio Cassar.

The St Margaret Band of Sannat at 5.30pm, will play festive band marches from Independence Square up to the Cathedral Square. This will be followed at 6.00pm by thanksgiving Mass at the Cathedral.

The band will then go back to Independence Square, where the ceremony will conclude with the laying of wreaths in front of the monument of Archpriest Saver Cassar who led the Gozitan revolution against the French.

Both the Victoria and Xaghra Scout Groups will be participating in the event

Victoria Mayor, Samuel Azzopardi will give a commemorative speech for the occasion.
